Rules of Etiquette
When visiting the Pueblo of Zuni on Non-Cultural Days and Cultural Ceremonial Days
Visiting the Pueblo of Zuni and taking tours of our Pueblo are privileges granted by the Pueblo of Zuni Tribal Council. Please remember you are visiting an active community of residents' daily lives and homes; it is not a museum or a theme park. Day-to-day life in Zuni varies throughout the months. Please be respectful and courteous, following the rules of etiquette.
Non-ceremonial culture days
- Check in and obtain community information at the Zuni Visitor's Center.
- You MUST register for a guided tour with the Zuni Visitors Center to visit the Pueblo. Please Stay with your tour guide at ALL times and do not wander off the designated tour route.
- Permits for cameras can be purchased at the Zuni Visitors Center.
- DO NOT drive through residential areas in the village.
- New Mexico Pueblos are not "living museums" or theme parks but are residential communities. Like any other community, these Pueblos are homes and should be respected as such.
- Do not climb walls or other structures. Some are several hundreds of years old and damage easily. Please do not pick up or remove any artifacts or objects.
- Pueblo Kivas and graveyards are not to be entered by visitors.
- Alcohol, weapons, and drugs will not be tolerated in the Pueblo. No pets allowed.
- Obey traffic, parking, and speed limit signs.
- The Pueblo of Zuni and Visitors Center is not responsible for injuries, theft, or damages incurred by visitors
ceremonial culture days
- Check-in at the Zuni Visitor's Center to obtain current community information, closures, events, etc.
- Photo permits are NOT ISSUED during cultural days.
- NO photography, audio/video recording, or sketching of religious ceremonies are allowed. Please do not carry cameras, cell phones, or recording equipment with you.
- NO unauthorized publication of information regarding our Cultural Ceremonies is permitted.
- Please abide by the "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" and "RESTRICTED AREA" signs. These areas are designated to protect the privacy of our residents and the sites of our native practices.
- Pueblo dances are religious ceremonies, not performances. Please observe them with respect and quiet attention as you would in a church service. please do not interrupt non-dance participants by asking questions or visiting with friends.
- Do not conduct business or loudly socialize during a dance.
- Do not attempt to touch any Kachinas. It is advised to stay at least 50 feet away from all kachinas, singers, and attendants. Only the attendants and other religious personnel are allowed to be near the kachinas and it is considered sinful to touch these spirit beings.
- Do not approach dancers as they are entering, leaving, or resting near the kiva.
- Never attempt to follow any kachinas into the house for any reason.
- Do not attempt to talk to or interact with religious personnel
- Do not block passageways or walk too close to kachinas or religious personnel
- Applause after dances are not appropriate.
- The Middle Village area is restricted to non-Zunis during Cultural Ceremony Days. Please do not wander around in restricted areas. (See areas highlighted in red)
- Non-Zunis can observe ceremonial dances on the Northern balcony area of the plaza (see map)
